Fun Ways to Recycle your Comfort Colors Tees

April 22, 2022 (Earth Day for those of you wondering) will be here soon and if you’re looking for fun ways to recycle some of the items you’ve already got laying around, we’ve got you covered.

If you’ve been buying from the Kappa Sigma Official Store for a while, you've probably got more than a few Comfort Colors t-shirts hanging in your closet. Odds are you aren’t wearing all of them on a regular basis anymore. Whether they are from a fraternity event years ago (hello spring rush, formals, and all the philanthropy events that you just had to have a shirt for) or you’ve just outgrown the design, it’s time to do some spring cleaning and recycle those old Comfort Colors tees!

Here are our top ways to recycle old Comfort Colors t-shirts:

Bleach/Tie Dye them:

Such a fun activity with the warm weather and one that you can do with your whole Kappa Sigma fraternity! All you need for this is any old Comfort Colors t-shirts, plastic gloves, water, and bleach or dye! Want to up your tie dye/bleach designs? Go grab some rubber bands and ice to make some fun, abstract tie dye art.

To start, all you have to do is combine your bleach and water (50/50) in a spray bottle, get your tee nice and saturated with some water (just water for this step!), and then apply your bleach/water mixture in whichever design you want. Here are our top 3 tie dye techniques:

1) Looking for something super easy? Just scrunch up your shirt and apply the bleach mixture. This will result in an abstract design that will be totally unique.

2) Fold your shirt and apply rubber bands before adding your bleach mixture. Can't decide on how you should add the rubber bands? Check out this blog for inspiration!

3) The ice technique! Once your shirt is saturated with water, lay it over some kind of rack or anything that will allow the melting ice to drip through. After that is done, crinkle up your shirt like the first technique mentioned above. Then you will take your ice and lay it over the entire shirt (we’ve heard that crushed ice is best for this method!), apply your beach on top of the ice, and then, the magic happens! As the ice melts the bleach will absorb into the tee in a super fun, abstract pattern.

Pass them down to your little:

This is by far the easiest way to recycle your tees! Just to pass 'em down to your fraternity little. We know sewn-on letters are a popular item to be passed down from one generation to the next so check out our Comfort Colors Sewn On Letter Tee so you can pass down the best of the best to your little when the time comes.

Turn them into a t-shirt quilt:

If your shirts have are too worn out to wear but you can’t bear to throw them out, a t-shirt quilt is the perfect solution! We will warn you that this one does take a lot more skill and tools than the other methods mentioned above but it will leave you with something that you can treasure forever. (Also if you have a mom or a grandma that loves to sew, this would be the perfect project for you guys to take on together!)

Depending on how big you’d like your quilt to be, you could use anywhere from 22-30 shirts. So if you've been really wanting to get rid of a lot of Comfort Colors at once, this is probably the project you need to be doing! Once you finish this project (tutorial here ), you will end up with a quilt full of great memories and lots of love.

These were only a few of the possible ways you could recycle your old Comfort Colors shirts (we also recommend making a t-shirt rug , dog toys , or a produce bag ) but we love the idea of repurposing and recycling something that’s special to you!
